Li Qiang attended the 20th East Asia Summit
Kuala Lumpur, Oct. 27 (Xinhua) -- On October 27 local time, Chinese Premier Li Qiang attended the 20th East Asia Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Li Qiang said that the East Asia Summit was born in Kuala Lumpur 20 years ago. Over the past 20 years, the summit has generally played a constructive role and promoted regional stability and rapid development. At present, the world has entered a new period of turbulence and transformation, and peace and development are confronted with many new risks and challenges. The chairman, Xi Jinping with an eye on addressing the changing world situation and solving pressing problems, solemnly put forward the global governance initiative, emphasizing the pursuit of sovereign equality, compliance with international rule of law, practice of multilateralism, advocacy of people-oriented approaches, and a focus on action orientation. This initiative is highly relevant to reality and highly consistent with the founding purpose of the East Asia Summit.
Li Qiang pointed out that China is willing to work with all parties to adhere to the original intention of the East Asia Summit, take active actions around the Global Governance Initiative, and jointly strive to inject more positive energy into regional peace and development. The first is to continue to build broad consensus. Mutual respect, equality, fairness and justice are important foundations for exchanges between countries. Economic globalization and world multi-polarization are irreversible. The world cannot retreat to the law of the jungle where the strong prey on the weak. Only by upholding these fundamental understandings that conform to the common values of all mankind and follow the trend of historical development can we make the right choices at critical moments and maintain the right direction on the road ahead. The second is to focus on solving prominent problems. Developing the economy and improving people's livelihood are the top priorities of all countries in this region. We should be more determined to safeguard the free trade system, strive to build a high-level regional free trade network, and promote regional integration vigorously and effectively. We should continue to pool more efforts to enhance people's well-being and achieve inclusive and beneficial development. The third is to reform and improve the rule system. The more volatile the situation is, the more we need to safeguard the authority of international rule of law. We should jointly abide by the rules, especially safeguard the international system with the United Nations at its core, support ASEAN's central position in the regional architecture, and act as a promoter of regional cooperation. At the same time, we should actively promote reforms, work to build a more just and reasonable global governance system, and better safeguard the interests of all parties.
The leaders attending the meeting said that the current international situation has undergone profound and complex changes, with geopolitical conflicts intensifying and protectionism on the rise. Regional countries should return to the original intention of the East Asia Summit, abide by the basic principles of international law such as multilateralism and the UN Charter, work together to promote peace-building, conduct dialogue in the spirit of mutual respect, innovate partnerships, strengthen practical cooperation, and jointly address challenges such as energy and food security, green transformation, climate change, and public health. Promote lasting peace, stability and prosperity in the region and the world.
The meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Anwar of Malaysia, the current chair of ASEAN. The meeting adopted the "Kuala Lumpur Declaration on the 20th Anniversary of the East Asia Summit" and the "Leaders' Statement on Localized Preventive Actions for Strengthening Disaster Preparedness and Response of the East Asia Summit".
